Dr Harpreet Singh sucessfully conducted operation of a woman

Hamirpur(HP), 16 October, 2013- The severed righthand thumb of 31-year-old Jahoo village resident here has been successfully operated upon. Thanks to the timely efforts of doctors at Alchemist Hospital in Panchkula, who despite the expiry of golden period of six hours successfully conducted the operation.
The woman, Meena Kumari, injured herself on October 11 at Jahu village in Bhoranj block of Hamirpur district in Himachal Pradesh with a grass-cutting machine. The golden period of six hours had expired and the woman was brought to the hospital in a serious condition, as her thumb had completely detached and got infected. The victim was taken to government hospital in Hamirpur, but authorities advised them to rush her to Chandigarh.

On the recommendation of one of their relatives in Solan, whose amputated finger was restored in the past, the victim’s family took her to Alchemist Hospital in Panchkula. Nine hours had already passed and chances of restoring her thumb were less as such operations need to be operated within six hours, but with the concerted efforts of reconstructive and plastic surgeon Dr Harpreet S Bakshi, her thumb was completely restored. The patient was discharged on Sunday.
Dr Bakshi said: “The chances of successfully operating the thumb were faint, as her amputated right-hand thumb, which got crushed and contaminated, was brought in a container nine hours after the accident. According to standard protocols, any amputated part has best chances of re-plantation / recovery, when brought in the first six hours (also known as the golden period), following amputation/injury, with minimal contamination and crush element. In cases, where limb/ digit has also been badly crushed chances of favorable result are even less.”
He said: “The patient’s right thumb was replanted after a five-hour effort. The procedure required microvascular repair of her digital artery and vein to restore circulation and repair her bone/ tendon and nerves for normal functioning.” Dr Bakshi said the patient should consider her lucky not to have lost it forever. Meena Kumari is now showing improvement, her husband Om Parkash said, thanking the doctors who performed the surgery.
